  • Making Butter at Home: Easier Than You Think

When I learned how easy it was to make butter at home, a whole new world was opened up to me! Not to mention the countless flavors you could make!

There are a few ways to make butter. My first few times was with a mason jar and a whole lot of strength. It was like a DIY shake weight! Throw your cream in the jar, tighten the lid, and shake until your arms feel like they are about to fall off! This process took about 30 minutes and left my arms sore for a day.

Now, I just use my food processor! Pour in your heavy cream, salt, and click one button. It can’t get easier than that!

If you’ve never made butter at home, you may wonder “how do I know when it’s done?” Oh, you’ll know! Your butter and buttermilk will completely separate, leaving you a hunk of fresh butter and a puddle of buttermilk for baking!

You may also have seen others wash their butter once it’s finished. If you’re looking for a butter that spreads easily, then I’d completely skip the cold water rinse and throw it straight into an air tight container.

If you’re looking for a more firm butter (similar to what you’d get in the store), rinse your butter under cold water and squeeze all of the excess buttermilk out. Once there is nothing left to squeeze out, your butter is ready for the fridge! And your hands will be extra moisturized and smooth after this step!

I especially love adding dried herbs or spices to my butter as I’m making it. It’s like you’re bringing a fancy Italian restaurant to your own kitchen! And on a warm loaf of homemade bread? You don’t have to tell me twice, I’m in!

Something about using homemade items is more rewarding, to me. Butter is one of those things that is so easy to make at home, why even buy it at the store?
