We recently harvested our potatoes and I am so impressed at our yield! Last year, we tried growing sweet potatoes in buckets. While it did work, they did not have enough room to grow large in the buckets. Most were long and thin! We had another patch that we did using a no-till method, and they were massive! We knew from that moment on that potatoes thrive better in a larger space.
This year, we planted less than 10 pounds of potatoes (red and white), and pulled over 40 POUNDS! They may not last us until next summer, but I predict they will last us at least 6 months.
How to Grow Potatoes:
If you have some potatoes on your counter that are starting to grow “eyes”, you can plant them!
Potatoes with eyes should be planted in rows about 3 inches deep, and 10-12 inches apart. Once the plants start to grow, you should mound your potatoes with more dirt.
Potatoes are super easy to care for. We usually watered ours 2-3 times a week. You’ll know they’re ready to harvest when all the greenery above the soil dies and dries up!
Once you harvest your potatoes, I recommend cold storing them. We stored ours in burlap sacks in our basement, where it stays cool and dry all the time!
